For years I have been an avid magazine reader. As a kid I used to buy everything from the Barbie magazine to the Archie adventures. Then I hit my teens and was in need of that crucial information, like how do you know he likes you, ten ways not to screw up your first kiss, and how to pick your first bra (not that I really needed one). The magazines were there to help me grow up.

Over the years I had always found a magazine to suit my shifting needs. But then came internet and everything changed. Magazines were now only recycling yesterdays news, everything I read I had already seen on internet. So I stopped buying them. And from then on I only bought them if I was traveling.

I was pretty consistent with my decision — until I discovered The Gentlewoman. The Gentlewoman is, according to the publishers, “a forward-looking magazine devoted to international women to love and admire”. And it really is. It’s charm are the success stories, the interviews and portraits of strong, successful women like Yoko Ono, Inez van Lamsweerde, Joan Juliet Buck, and Rain Li. I love the magazine because it really inspires me, and in this case it’s not about the shoes or clothes, it’s about the people.

This is just the second issue and really hope it will survive in the cut throat magazine market, so we can enjoy many more issues of the Gentlewoman. She deserves it.

Oh, and for you men reading this, they also publish a male version of the magazine called Fantastic Man.

Durante años había sido una ávida lectora de revistas. Cuando era niña compraba todo lo que estuviera entre la revista de la Barbie y las aventuras de Archie. Luego la adolescencia llegó y con ella la necesidad de información crucial para sobrellevar tanto cambio, era necesaria la ayuda “profesional” para identificar si le gustabas a ese compañero de clases, para no regarla en tu primer beso y por supuesto para escoger tu primer sostén (que, por cierto, nunca necesité). Las revistas estaban ahí para ayudarme a crecer.

Los años pasaron y siempre encontraba alguna revista que satisfaciera mis necesidades, siempre cambiantes. Pero llegó el internet y todo cambió. Las revistas no solo reciclaban noticias pasadas sino que sus páginas estaban llenas de imágenes que ya había visto en internet. Deje de comprarlas. Desde entonces solo compro alguna si estoy de viaje.

Habia sido congruente con mi decisión hasta que descubrí The Gentlewoman. Sus editores la describen como “La revista progresista dedicada a mujeres internacionales para amarlas y admirarlas” y yo no podría estar mas de acuerdo. Su encanto radica en las historias de éxito, las entrevistas, los retratos de mujeres fuertes y exitosas como Yoko Ono, Inez van Lamsweerde, Joan Juliet Buck y Rain Li. Amé la revista porque realmente inspira, y en este caso la inspiración no proviene de los zapatos y la ropa sino de las personas.

Este es apenas el segundo número y realmente espero que sobreviva. Lo merece.
