Esta semana en “The Closet Voyeur” José Manuel Espínola, quien prácticamente se dedica a cualquier cosa creativa que se cruce en su camino. José Manuel es diseñador, fotógrafo y director de arte en el despacho multidisciplinario BRUTAL Inc.

Sueño.

Nunca recuerdo completamente mis sueños, solo recuerdo los sentimientos que estos me provocaron,

emoción, angustia, inspiración; algunas veces esas breves imágenes se repiten en mi realidad como -deja vu- , pero las historias raramente me son contadas con un orden específico, son confusos y asombrosos.

Sueño de vida… el amor puro e incondicional.

Frase.

Hay muchas frases que me gustan, de músicos, poetas, escritores, etc.. de hecho tengo un tumblr que me ayuda a capturar todas las que leo y las archivo sobreponiendo imágenes que las sacan de contexto y algunas veces refuerzan su significado. Diseñador

Creo que todo diseñador tiene la responsabilidad de cambiar paradigmas visuales y de comunicación, no solo se trata de hacer composiciones armoniosas si no de dar mensajes más concientes, sobre todo en una sociedad tan enviciada visualmente. De esta conciencia se deben impregnar hasta donde se pueda las ideas de cada encargo. Creo que la estética no es exclusiva de una élite cultural.

Zapatos

Creo que este tema ya no es exclusivo de las mujeres, a quién no le gustan los zapatos? Digo, son la base de tu vestimenta.

Accesorios.
Prefiero mantenerlo muy simple.

Es imposible para mí poder hablar de una canción favorita, pues desde que tengo memoria la música me ha acompañado desde siempre en cada una de las etapas de mi vida, amo la música y como Nietzsche creo que la vida será un error sin ella. Algunas de las que mas me marcaron en este primer ciclo del año están en este mixtape que hice para mi blog de música, se llama “Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers”, que es oscurísimo , aunque no siempre ande en esos viajes. Barrera cultural, para estas fechas ya deberíamos estar hablando todos el mismo.

Tengo ya 5 años con un blog de música independiente llamado www.pfas.mx (antes prettyefreshallstars.blogspot.com)

Empezamos con varios colaboradores y a la mala subiendo discos que los 5 entonces colaboradores reseñaban, subíamos lo que nos parecían joyas musicales, ahora en esta nueva etapa se trata más de reseñar solo lo que realmente nos atrapa, una especia de curaduría musical más que una constante y actualizada lista de “artistas” que van y vienen. Con el tiempo empezamos a crear contenido exclusivo para el blog, más que replicar cosas que están por todos lados. Hacemos documentales de artistas que nos interesa cubrir en video por su sentido de propuesta, con ellos hacemos entrevistas, micro-documentales y sesiones que compartimos en el blog. También nos armamos buenos mixtapes que se puedes descargar.

Y como si hubiera tiempo para aventar al cielo, a principios de este año me hice de vvhateva.tumblr.com dónde publico contenido de arte, música, diseño, animación, new media, foto, vintage stuff que interpongo con frases y lyrics, para cambiar un poco la interpretación, es una bitácora más personal de lo que me encuentro por ahí y de situaciones que me ayudan a recordar etapas de mi vida, para mí es como un diario, para los demás en un tumblr más… digamos que el twitter se quedó corto.

Revista

Actualmente dentro del studio estamos haciendo taxi around the art, una revista de arte contemporáneo que se distribuye en varios puntos de la ciudad y el extranjero, lo que tratamos de hacer ahí es darle un acercamiento desde un contexto latinoamericano al publico que no necesariamente es un experto en arte, con un lenguaje mas amigable, generalmente en tercera persona y con colaboradores que andan por todos lados haciendo lo que hacen mejor, arte.
De otras cosas trato de seguir a fanzines independientes de arte y diseño, aunque son muy difíciles de conseguir pues generalmente son piezas numeradas y limitadas en distribución e impresión… de las ya más comerciales me encanta la “ELEPHANT” ” Monocle”, “Interview” “Fantastic Man” “Mousse” “Mark” etc..

Libro

Lolita de Vladimir Nabokov, Crimen y castigo de Dostoievski & Steppenwolf de Hermann Hesse, esos son los tres que siempre recordaré.

Mi actividad favorita tiene siempre que ver con música y diseño o cualquier cosa que me permita expresar ideas bajo cualquier medio, que es básicamente mi trabajo.

Coco+Kelley, Es uno de mis favoritos; la primera vez que lo vi me gustó mucho la manera en que este par hace obvia la relación entre moda y decoración de interiores, tendencias y paletas de color. Es totalmente “girly” y cursi pero está divertido para aquellos que les gusta que todo esté coordinado.

Coco+Kelly, It’s one of my favorites; the first time I saw that blog I really liked the way this two emphasize the close relationship between fashion and interior design, trends and pallets. It’s totally girlie but its fun for those who want everything to be well matched.

Revista: No tengo revista favorita. Puedo comprar cualquiera si tiene algo que en realidad me interesa y que no encuentre en Google.

The Closet Voyeur: Paola Beck

As a child I always wanted to see what other peoples toilets looked like. Why? No idea. But now with the Closet Voyeur I’ve seen more than just toilets — I’ve got to see their work spaces, that intimate space where the magic happens. Especially for artists, like Paola Beck.

Paola´s life is interesting, full of influences from around the world. Her father’s German, her mother’s Mexican. She studied in Rome, Italy, and she lived in Germany. She’s a photographer, illustrator, painter, and aspiring hula hooper.

Sueño : últimamente, cada vez sueño más con el mar, hoy soñé que estaba en alemania, en un picnic, viendo una performance de la última cena (?) y cuando iba a tomarles fotos vi que atrás estaba el MAR, y cuando corrí para meter los pies, me desperté, pero sonriendo.

Dream: Lately, every time I dream more about the sea. Today I dreamed I was in Germany, on a picnic, watching a performance of the last supper. And when I was about to take pictures, I saw the sea behind them, and when I ran to wet my feet I woke up, smiling.

Sueño

Toda la semana pasada tuve pesadillas. En la más rara Will Smith y su familia cometían un suicidio colectivo dentro de un blockbuster y lo transmitían en un stream. Me acuerdo que me meti al internet y todas las páginas hablaban de eso, jaja. Después los narcos me empezaban a perseguir porque según en el sueño uno de mis roomies traficaba marihuana (el vato tenía unas bolsotas!). Nos aventaban granadas a la casa y cosas por el estilo. Estuvo súper bizarro. Siempre que se acaba la pesadilla a la mitad de la noche, me meto al hotmail y se los mando a algún amigo y cuando los vuelvo a ver por la mañana jaja me da mucha risa, sueño pura pinche cosa loca.

Dream

All of last week i had nightmares. In the strangest one Will Smith and his family committed suicide inside of a blockbuster store and broadcasted it via stream. I remember checking out the web and all the websites were talking about it jaja. After that the drug cartels were after me because in the dream one of my roomies was a pot dealer (he had huge bags of weed!) They would throw grenades at us and stuff like that. It was very bizarre. Every time a nightmare ends I check into hotmail and send the dream to a friend. When I read them again it just makes me laugh, i dream only crazy stuff!

No tengo ningún diseñador favorito, pero todas las muchachas que me gustan estan fascinadas con Marc Jacobs. Así que ese vato queda name-checked. Y cuando alguien menciona la palabra diseñador siempre pienso en Danny Macabre, uno de los ex-bateristas de Mentira Mentira y que esta estudiando diseño de modas. También tiene una banda bien chida que se llama Le Macabre Party que deberían buscar en myspace porque en vdd son muy buenos!

I don´t have any favorite designer but all the girls I like are fascinated with Marc Jacobs. So that dude gets name checked. And when someone mentions the word “designer” I always think about Danny Macabre, ex-Mentira Mentira drummer. He’s studying fashion design. Normalmente uso tennis (antes era super fan de los Nike Jordan), pero si de zapatos se trata mi amigo Giovanni tiene una colección de zapatos llamada “Les Impertinents“, estan muy bien. Son los mejores zapatos de este mundo!! Compren 10 pares y digan que yo se los recomende.

Libro

“Rachel’s Holiday” de Marian Keyes. Se trata de una muchacha que acaba en una clínica de rehabilitación por accidente y de repente se da cuenta de que no fue ni de tan accidente. Ja. Esta bueno, Marian Keyes es mi escritora favorita porque escribe más o menos como yo lo haría si fuera escritor. También me gustó mucho uno que se llama “Too Fat to Fish”. Lo escribió Artie Lange, que es un cómico que sale en el programa de Howard Stern. El caso es que lo compré pensando que me la pasaría riendo (y si lo hice) pero también me hizo llorar en varias partes. Heavy Stuff.

Book

“Rachel’s Holiday” by Marian Keyes. About a girl who ends up in a rehab facility by accident and all of the sudden realizes that it wasn´t that much of an accident. Its a good read, Marian Keyes is my favorite author because she writes just like I would write if I were a writer. I also enjoyed very much Artie Lange’s “Too Fat to Fish”. Artie Lange is a comedian that appears in the Howard Stern show. I bought the book thinking I was going to spend the whole read laughing (and I did) but it also made me cry in various parts. Heavy Stuff.

Actividad favorita: Decirle a Violeta de Ratas del Vaticano que ya haga una banda propia para poder tocar con ella.

Favorite activity: Telling Violeta from Ratas del Vaticano to make a band of her own so i can play with her.

Película

Me encantan las películas! No podría escoger sólo una. Creo que mi favorita del momento es “Tesis” de Alejandro Amenabar. Por alguna razón algunas de mis peliculas favoritas tienen como tratma hacer películas (“GQ”, “Inland Empire”,etc). La saga del Planeta de los Simios también esta cercana a mi corazón. No sé, diario veo películas… odio a Michael Bay.

Movie

I love movies! I couldn´t pic just one. Right now my favorite is “Tesis” by Alejandro Amenabar. For some reason some of my favorite movies are about making movies (“GQ”, “Inland Empire”, etc). The Planet of the Apes saga is also very close to my heart. I dont know, i watch movies daily. I hate Michael Bay.
