Scandinavian Monday: Swedish Fika

Hoy es Lunes Escandinavo y me tocó escribir la entrada de Andy. Él empezó a trabajar y según no tiene tiempo para bloguear por el momento. Bah Sueco flojo! Lo bueno es que yo viví en Suecia un rato así que tengo material interesante para escribir sobre Escandinavia.
Today is Scandinavian Monday time and I´m taking on El Andy´s post. He started to work and according to him he doesn’t have time to blog anymore. Bah lazy Swedish! The good thing is that I lived in Sweden for a little while therefore I can continue writing interesting stuff about Scandinavia.
Image by Tarde o Temprano Algo que note durante mi primera semana ahí fue la importancia que tiene el café en la vida de los Suecos. ¿Sabían que las ciudades Escandinavas ocupan los primeros lugares en la lista de consumidores de café en el mundo? Eso explica porque tienen este ritual llamado “Fika”. La palabra se refiere a la pausa para tomar café, pero no es una pausa cualquiera, no se trata de pedir el café para llevar o de beber café enfrente de la computadora o mientras manejas. La Fika es el momento para reunirte con los amigos, relajarte, disfrutar de la vida con una taza de café, un sándwich o un delicioso Kanelbulle (rol de canela), y créanme es tan importante en su cultura como lo es la hora del té para los ingleses.
Image by Tarde o Temprano Something I noticed during my first week there was the importance of coffee in Swedish life. Did you know that Scandinavian countries are among the very top world coffee consumers? Well that explains why they have this little ritual called “Fika” which means to take a coffee break, but not any coffee break, it is not about taking your coffee to go, or drinking your coffee in front of the computer or while driving. The Fika is the moment to gather with friends, relax, enjoy life with a cup of coffee, a sandwich, or a delicious and traditional kanelbulle (cinnamon roll) and believe me is very important in their culture just as it is the tea time for the English people.
Para que se les antoje irse de Fika aquí les dejo una receta súper fácil para preparar un pay de manzana. La primera vez que probé este pay fue en un Café Sueco. No sé si la receta es originaria de Suecia pero lo que sí se es que les va a encantar. So to get you in the Fika mood here a very easy recipe of a delicious apple pie. The first time I tried this pie was at a Swedish café. I don´t really know if is original Swedish but what I know is you will love it.
Relleno / Filling Masa / Dough
Pela las manzanas y córtalas en rebanaditas. Colócalas en un refractario previamente engrasado con mantequilla.
Peal the apples and cut them into pieces. Put them in a buttered oven form.
Espolvorea la ½ taza de azúcar y canela sobre las manzanas y mezcla un poco.
Add 1 dl sugar and the cinnamon on top of them and mix around. Para la masa mezcla con tus manos el azúcar, la harina y la mantequilla hasta que queden como en la foto.

you are right, fika is very important in our culture. in fact, every worker has the right to at least two “fika breaks” a day, plus lunch. where I work now, we take four or five;) and a couple in between.

Berenice, me pongo de pie ante tu post. Espero que el Andy no se ponga celoso, pero es el mejor lunes escandinavo que hemos visto por aqui. Por todo, por las fotos, por el texto, por la receta (ya me lo estuve sospechando ayer que hablamos por teléfono). Eres grande!
By the way, that Andy’s response “it’s not laziness, it’s a social thing” remembered me a lot the kind of responses my franchute used to give to me when i said something not pretty about french people (i’m smiling).
Andy, Bere is being evilish with you, all we know you have a lot of work, but please find some time to keep blogging in here.

Great post, my friend. I love the pictures and the graphic DIY or the apple pie! I have to tell, if I had Fika breaks during the Sweeden winter, probably I would preffer get all my work done and do not go outside unless is mandatory… But is because I usually cold!
By the way, the last instruction: “eat” is wonderful. Specially ’cause I was thinking about just stared at the pie forever… Bere, me hiciste reír de verdad!
