Willy Ronis 1910–2009

Photojournalist Willy Ronis was born in Paris to a Lithuanian piano teacher and a Ukranian studio photographer. He worked in his father’s Montmarte studio until the father’s death in 1936. He then closed the studio and joined the photo agency Rapho, with Brassaï, Robert Doisneau and Ergy Landau.

In 1953 Edward Steichen included his work in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art titled Five French Photographers—the other four were Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Izis and Brassaï. Ronis was also included in the Family of Man exhibit in 1955. In 1957 Ronis was awarded the Gold Medal at the Venice Biennale.

Willy Ronis passed away on September 12, 2009.

And if you happen to speak french here’s an interview with Willy Ronis:

8mm of beauty

The other day I was browsing around in the local secondhand store, when I came across a little beauty hidden in a corner. It was a fully functional Fujica Z1 single-8 camera. Hardly a scratch on it. It even came with an unexposed film cassette. And with a price tag of only 50kr (about 80 pesos) I simply couldn’t resist.

Not quite sure about what to do with it, though. Films tend to be a tad expensive and hard to find, and then there is this whole ordeal with transferring it to digital, etc.

Below you’ll find a few examples of some stunning 8mm videos from vimeo. It’s really something special about that medium, don’t you think?

Irving Penn R.I.P by El Andy

The great Irving Penn, father of modern fashion and portrait photography, passed away this wednesday.

Penn worked many years doing fashion photography for Vogue magazine, and he was one of the first photographers to pose his models in front of just a simple white or grey backdrop, favoring simplicity before complexity.

Although Penn found success photographing advertising and celebrities, he also enjoyed portraying indigenous people around the world with his portable studio.

Irving Penn became 92 years old.

inspirational quote to help you get through the day:

“…believe that the sort of life you wish to live is, at this very moment, just waiting for you to summon it up. And when you wish for it, you begin moving toward it, and it, in turn, begins moving toward you.” Suzan-Lori Parks
